In the practice of Yoga, a very common term one will hear on a regular basis is that of the asanas. In all simplicity, an asana is the positions that one holds throughout the practice of the art form. They are developed in order to help one maintain their well-being as well as cleanse both their body and mind.

Furthermore, not only do asanas refer to the actual positions utilized in practice of Yoga, but may also refer to a seated but firm position. In the old days, Yoga used to be nothing more then a simple seated position. Over the centuries this has evolved into the form we see today but rather then change the name of the position, asanas remain as the most commonly used term to describe them.

This can be confirmed by linguists who have noted that in the ancient Sanskrit writings, asana is referred to on a regular basis simply as a seated position. Since it is from ancient Sanskrit, many people today as a means of separating it from the traditional meaning of the term have since adopted yogasanas to describe all of the positions used in the practice. However this is not readily used every where and by every practitioner. The word however should not be confused with ashtanga which refers directly to the 8 limbs of Yoga, nor should it be confused with the style that shares its same name.

When you choose to learn and practice Yoga, you will need to learn the postures, poses and positions of the particular style you are learning; you will have to learn the style’s asanas. By learning and memorizing them, you will begin to develop more benefits through the art form’s practice as yo will be able to smoothly transition from one position to the next which will increase the effect of each position.

Many people are turning to Yoga as part of their everyday exercise plan. The reason for this is simply because of the many great Yoga benefits which one can avail. Of course we cannot forget to mention that Yoga is also a lot easier to perform then many other exercise programs out there which makes just about anyone perfect for this form of exercise.

Yoga is known for its cleansing abilities that help one feel better as well as gain some peace in their life. It has been shown to extremely helpful for sufferers of many different disorders and is now a regular option with regards to physical therapy.

Some Yoga benefits include an increase in one’s flexibility as well as lubrication of the body’s joints. The Yoga positions act upon the various portions of our body without any stress; parts that we may not even use on a regular basis. As a result, a form of harmony begins to exist and a practitioner’s body will slowly become more flexible and have better lubricated joints.

During the practice of Yoga, all of our internal organs are slowly getting massaged which helps them to function better. When one practices Yoga on a consistent basis, they become more in tune with their body and can readily tell when anything is out of place; including the development of sickness or some form of medical disorder before it can be easily diagnosed. Through the massaging of the organs though, practicing Yoga can lead to an improved detoxification f the body which will leave you feeling healthier, stronger as well as more active.

There are of course so many other great benefits of Yoga which is why so many people continue to turn to this practice on a regular basis; you should too.

One of the most common and perhaps one of the most important positions in the practice of Yoga is known as the sun salutation. Of course this is just a generic name that has been given to it; the real name is Sury Namaskara.

The sun salutation consists of a total of 12 different postures that alternate from the back to the front and features both stretched as well as bent positions. This particular part of Yoga runs the spinal column through its full range of motion. It helps to better oxygenate the body which results in improved detoxification and just feeling healthier.

There are many benefits of performing the sun salutation on a regular basis that includes things like the massaging of the digestive tract that helps to keep it in top conditions, ventilates the lungs and helps improve the oxygen levels of the blood, gets rid of carbon dioxide as well as many other toxins from the body and even helps to normalize the endocrine system; most notably helps to keep the thyroid in top condition. Women who practice regularly insist that the sun salutation helps to firm up their breasts as well as suppresses irregular menstrual periods. It is also known to prevent loss of hair as well as reducing fat.

However, while there are some great benefits to performing the sun salutation daily, women who are pregnant should refrain from this posture after the third trimester. Those who have hernias and high blood pressure should also sustain and women who are menstruating should not du the sun salutation. Thos who may have a back condition should consult with their physician before hand to determine if it is alright for them to perform and how often it is safe to do.

When it comes to being pregnant, every mother-to-be would like to continue staying in the best possible physical shape. Unfortunately for them, many different exercise programs out there are just too harsh to perform throughout one’s pregnancy. Prenatal Yoga however, is not.

Irregardless of whether you are an experienced Yoga practitioner or just getting involved in it, Prenatal Yoga has so many great benefits, not only for the mother, but also for the unborn child. It is important though that you keep in mind, you will have to follow by certain guidelines to get the most out of Prenatal Yoga without the risk of potential injury.

As someone who has never before practiced Yoga, you will find that it is the perfect exercise to help keep you and your baby in top shape. When joining a class though, it is important that you look for ones specifically labeled as prenatal and make sure to inform the coach that you are pregnant as there will be some poses you should not do depending upon your trimester. The goal is an early start because the sooner you begin, the better the results of practicing Prenatal Yoga; many moms to be have been able to continue practicing all the way up to birth.

As for those who have been practicing for quite some time, you will be able to continue attending your regular classes, but just make sure to keep your instructor up to date with the latest pregnancy information so they can make sure that both you and your unborn child are as safe as possible.

In the end though, you will definitely be glad you chose to practice Prenatal Yoga throughout your pregnancy. Then once your child is old enough, you can practice your Yoga poses together.

When it comes to practicing Yoga, many beginners will hear one term over and over again so it is a good point to cover it. The term we are referring to is that of pranayama. It is actually composed of two separate Sanskrit word which can be loosely translated to breath control, or breathing control.

In practicing Yoga, one of the fundamentals in any pose is the pranayama; one’s ability to control their breathing throughout the pose. In its most fundamental form, it allows the practitioner to focus on the breathing allowing them to get the most out of the poses.

While some people may insist that it is not so much the breathing control as it is the control of the pranic current of life, but irregardless of its translation, in practice one handles this through their control of breath and breathing throughout the stretches. It is in fact one of the most basic fundamentals with regards to practicing Yoga as one cannot simply perform the poses of the art without also incorporating the breathing control if they want to avail the benefits of the practice.

As with any pose, it is important to breathe in, then breathe out as you continue to stretch further until you have reached your maximum stretching point. This is done over and over again as a means of allowing one to stretch even further. If you simply try to reach your toes with a lung full of air, you may or may not be able to do it depending on your physical fitness level. However, if you breathe out as you reach for your toes, take a pause to breath in again, then stretch further with your next outgoing breath; you will continue to be able to stretch up until a maximum point in which your body begins feeling pain.

However, the next day when you do the same exact stretch in the same manner, you will find an ability to stretch even further. This continues on until you are very flexible and can accomplish the feat without thinking about it.

In recent years, a new form of Yoga has been becoming increasingly popular. This new form is known simply as Power Yoga and it is a fitness based approach to the Ashtanga style of Yoga.

For those familiar with Yoga, will know that Yoga is mostly about stretching and holding poses as a means of improving one’s self. The introduction of the fitness based Power Yoga means that you will also be able to get many of the physical fitness benefits of this practice as well. It was back in the 1990s when Power Yoga was first introduced by teachers who wanted to introduce students in the Westernized world to Yoga.

Before the practice of Yoga as a meditation and stretching art form became popular, it was Power Yoga that made its way into many gyms around the world. Bryan Kest along with Beryl Bender Birch had studied Ashtanga Yoga under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and then made the decision to introduce this practice into gyms across America. Using the same techniques as traditional Yoga, this power form focuses on their performance in a manner which leads to an improved physical fitness level as well as an increased oneness with one’s self.

It is a fast paced version but none the less in its roots are the basic concepts and principals which make Yoga a popular practice today. People all over the world are beginning to feel and enjoy the effects of this practice through improved awareness, flexibility and overall health. Whether you are a beginner to Yoga or have been already practicing it for quite some time now, you will be able to benefit from Power Yoga without question.

Since the 15th century, Hatha Yoga has been a popular choice for many practitioners around the world. It was Yogi Swatmarama who introduced it originally as a preparatory stage of purification. If one wants to achieve a higher meditative state, he or she must practice Hatha Yoga in order to do so.

It makes use of most of the same poses that are found in many Yoga disciplines. In order for one to truly attain a heightened state which is a necessity in order to meditate, one needs to cleanse their body of toxins as well as cleanse their soul spiritually. Through the practice of Hatha Yoga, they are able to do just that.

Under the guidance of a master, any beginner practitioner would have to complete this level before being deemed ready to move on to a more advanced form of the practice. In the westernized world, most practitioners who follow Yoga are in fact practicing the Hatha Yoga style.

Unless you have a master near by, then most people in the Western world are never able to move on to more advanced styles of Yoga properly; only a Yogi can determine if one is ready for the next stage. While there are many different forms to learn and practice, for the most part, the vast majority of Yoga practitioners get the most out of practicing Hatha Yoga.

Through the regular performance of its poses and postures, one can cleanse their body, improve their internal organs and become more flexible then they ever thought possible. However, it is important that once you make the decision to begin practicing Yoga you stick with it consistently. If you only chose to practice from time to time, then you will never really see any of the many benefits that are most commonly associated with the practice of Hatha Yoga.

In the practice of Yoga, the beginner knows nothing more then the concept of Yoga itself. But after a while, you begin to realize that there are many different forms of Yoga which have been developed over the years by various masters. Not every form is right for every person and some people will benefit more from one style then another.

Kundalini Yoga is one of those such styles which you can practice. It is considered to be both a meditative as well as physical form of the art which is most closely associated with Hatha Yoga; it consists of a series of advanced poses that have become known as Kriya. By tradition, Kundalini Yoga is considered to be a purely spiritual science which is designed to lead its practitioners to enlightenment.

While today just about anyone can get involved with Kundalini Yoga, it was traditionally only passed on from a master to a disciple once that master had deemed the student qualified to practice it. It is believed that one who practices Kundalini Yoga without being ready to follow its methods strictly will suffer from psychic disturbances or even suffer from mental damage. These conditions are even known in the psychiatric world as Kundalini Syndrome.

However, if you have been deemed ready to begin learning Kundalini Yoga, they by all means enjoy this very advanced form. But make sure that you are doing it under the proper guidance of a spiritual master and make sure that you are following his or her directions and suggestions completely. In the end though, you will feel better and more complete then you have ever felt which is what makes practicing any form of Yoga a great choice for just about anyone out there today.

In the practice of Yoga, there are only a few major styles regularly practiced in the West. The most common form which most people constitute as Yoga is known as Hatha. The other major form is known as Bikram Yoga.

Bikram Yoga is known by those in the practice as a hot style of the art in which one generally practices this form in temperatures greater then 105°F and with humidity levels in excess of 40%. There are a total of 27 different postures used in this style and the average class will last an hour and a half.

It was originally developed by Bikram Choudhury who developed the form in Beverly Hills and has since developed the Bikram’s Yoga College of India which is found in Los Angeles. He was trained in Calcutta at the Bishnu Ghosh School and currently holds two different copyrights on his form of Yoga. Each and every single teacher is required to undergo training and receive certification directly through him.

Today, Bikram Yoga is found in more then 500 studios world wide, most of which are owned exclusively by Bikram himself. Since its opening, his college has trained more then 3,000 instructors which have since made Bikram Yoga available all over the world.

In practicing Bikram Yoga, you must be ready to endure the hotter temperatures and higher humidity associated with the art form. In most cases, they are performed in specially designed heat rooms which allow them to maintain the constant 105°F temperatures as well as the 40% humidity needed to get the most out of this style.

The increased temperatures and humidity help the student to cleanse their body of toxins while they are practicing the postures. This is done in line with the concept of Yoga which is that of purifying both the body as well as the soul. The concept of performing Yoga in warmer conditions is nothing new, as it has been practiced for centuries in India where the average temperatures of some regions can average those levels on a yearly basis.

In Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga is considered to be one of the oldest styles still practiced today. It can be dated back to the ancient texts, Yoga Korunta, which were compiles many centuries ago. In both Indian forms of wrestling and British forms of gymnastics, one can find various aspects of Ashtanga Yoga.

Also known as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, this style was developed by Krishnamacharya whose teachings have held a considerable amount of influence on most styles taught today. In its original use, Krishnamacharya developed Ashtanga Yoga while working under the Maharaja of Mysore. It was at this time that he developed Ashtanga Yoga for the homeless adolescents of the region.

Ashtanga Yoga is considered to be a more demanding version of Yoga when compared to Hatha which is the most commonly practiced style today. It is more physically demanding because it needed to be in order to challenge and help the overactive minds of adolescents achieve enlightenment. This also helped to reduce their stress levels as well as develop inner peace with one’s self. If one is overactive, irregardless of their age, Ashtanga Yoga may be a better alternative to choose from.

In practice, one makes use of dynamic postures that essentially flow when compared to the more static postures found in Hatha. One must be ready to control their breathing while performing this style as one’s breathing is done in direct correlation with their movements and is done for specific periods of time. Furthermore, while in Hatha one can switch from one posture to the next, even though it appears jagged, in Ashtanga Yoga all transitions are done in a flowing manner with one another to appear as if it is but one complete posture. The most commonly practiced postures used in Ashtanga Yoga and that has been accepted into many other forms of Yoga, is the Sun Salutation which consists of 12 different positions.

The ultimate goal of practicing this form of Yoga is to ease the mind while at the same time generating heat within the body. This heat generation helps to rid the body of toxins and therefore cleanse and purify the body completely.
