In recent years, a new form of Yoga has been becoming increasingly popular. This new form is known simply as Power Yoga and it is a fitness based approach to the Ashtanga style of Yoga.

For those familiar with Yoga, will know that Yoga is mostly about stretching and holding poses as a means of improving one’s self. The introduction of the fitness based Power Yoga means that you will also be able to get many of the physical fitness benefits of this practice as well. It was back in the 1990s when Power Yoga was first introduced by teachers who wanted to introduce students in the Westernized world to Yoga.

Before the practice of Yoga as a meditation and stretching art form became popular, it was Power Yoga that made its way into many gyms around the world. Bryan Kest along with Beryl Bender Birch had studied Ashtanga Yoga under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and then made the decision to introduce this practice into gyms across America. Using the same techniques as traditional Yoga, this power form focuses on their performance in a manner which leads to an improved physical fitness level as well as an increased oneness with one’s self.

It is a fast paced version but none the less in its roots are the basic concepts and principals which make Yoga a popular practice today. People all over the world are beginning to feel and enjoy the effects of this practice through improved awareness, flexibility and overall health. Whether you are a beginner to Yoga or have been already practicing it for quite some time now, you will be able to benefit from Power Yoga without question.
